The sea, the boat and the fishing nets, the melancholy in the eyes of the fishermen returning to land, the perfume of typical delicacies of Le MARCHE, the strong and fearless personality of those who have spent their lives at sea and the bravery of those who have waited them back home: all this is in the air you breathe when you cross San Benedetto del Tronto, the city where Caffè del Marinaio was created, original name and recipe of the liquor later called
OLD SAILOR COFFEE LIQUEUR.
Inspired by ponce, a typical drink of Italian coastal areas, usually drunk by sailors, that consists of moka coffee with Rhum and anise liquor, adding a cinnamon stick and orange peel at the very end to give a twist of sweetness to the flavour.
OLD SAILOR COFFEE LIQUEUR can be enjoyed warm or cold, or mixed in countless cocktails for a kick of energy and a spin of flavours.
We have revisited the traditional recipe bringing you the best of Adriatic history and modern world combined, keeping Columbian Rhum as its main ingredient, to which are added:
GROUND COFFEE, from the oldest roastery of Italy, Torrefazione Barbera, brewed in cold water. The choice of an excellent coffee blend is important to create distinctive velvety and smooth taste of the liquor;
ORANGE PEELS, infused in alcohol. The Organic oranges that are used for Old Sailor Coffee grows in Tuscany, exactly where the juniper for our Ginepraio can be found;
ANICE VERDE DI CASTIGNANO (Presidio Slow Food) found in Le Marche, infused in alcohol. Used in very small quantities, just to add softness and its natural sweetness.
After a few days, the separate infusions are mixed, adding the sugar needed for the stabilization. The quantity of sugar used is never more than 17%, which is still only half of the amount found in other coffee liquors.
